Back in the day when Sundays in the winter were all about NBA games on TV they had a H-O-R-S-E tourney that ran at half time. Check out Pistol Pete. The stuff he was doing was, at the time, unlike anything we had ever seen. I remember well running out to my shoveled driveway to master his shots. I did not lose many HORSE games in those days...I might have to head out to my driveway tonight to see if I can still pass the ball behind my back for a layup.

Bo Overrated?

Can we finally stop pretending that Bo Ryan is one of the elite coaches in America? He is a good coach...maybe close to very good but his archaic offensive philosophy and closed minded approach to defense will always prevent his teams from winning when it matters...the post season. As is the case often times in coaching his incredible ego and arrogance (ask any reporter that has had to put up with his "smartest guy in the room" schtick) stops him from admitting that there may be more then one way to win a basketball game.

As I have pointed out many times over the last few years,Bo's teams are unable to out score an opponent(look at his record when opponents score 70+ points). Look at Tom Izzo's team...they needed to score 85 points to win a tourney game and they did. Bo's squad needed to score 88 and they of course failed again. When you play in the tourney you are playing well coached, talented offensive teams. Great offense always beats good defense(on a given night) so when a team faces a great offense they need to be able to turn it up themselves. The swing and the ridiculous pace that Bo teaches is great in the plodding Big Ten but will continue to be a huge part of the Badger's post season failures.

Lets look at his defensive philosophy. Why anyone ever runs anything other then pick and roll basketball against Bo's teams I will never understand. How many years will Wisconsin be run out of the tourney because a player or players goes off on Bo's vaunted man-man? My guess is that this continues until Bo admits that he is not the smartest man in every room and actually looks at a few options defensively to slow down a hot player.

I understand that Wisconsin has improved their basketball program under Bo. They are at least relevant in the regular season Big Ten. But is it too much to ask that occasionally they make a deep post season run? They were lucky to beat Wofford, a Southern Conf. team and were blown out of the gym by Cornell...a non scholarship Ivy League team. Please Bo take a look in the mirror and tell me that you are doing everything in your power to take UW to a deep post season run. I don't think you can do that...in fact I bet you ask your wife to have the mirrors out of your house by the time you get home from your latest post season debacle. Oh, one more thing...can you get off your butt and recruit some offensive players? Or would that mean that you would actually have to go into a hot gym during your summer months?

I am sorry to say that I will be leaving work early today because of the weather. The wind is howling and the snow plows are out...that means that my driveway (that took me an hour to snow blow this morning to get into work)will soon be once again plowed shut.

I also got stuck in the snow this morning and watched 3 of my new "neighbors" sneak away from shoveling so they would not have to help me. Nothing says "Happy Holiday" like 3 jerks hiding so they will not have to take 1 minute from their busy day and help push a stranded motorist out of the snow. I walked the half block back to my house and got a shovel and my wife...it took us another 35 minutes to shovel and push my car free. During this experience another of my new "neighbors" was spied looking out their window. Again, of course, no offer to help was forthcoming.

To you, my listeners, I say...sorry for not having a show. To my new "neighbors" I say @#$%, $%*&, you @#*&^ , $%#@! And print it!

Today I will chat with Lew Gruppo and Emmett Prosser. I will also probably spend some time complaining about the piss poor recruiting effort of one Bo Ryan. Why is it that we have come to expect that programs like Gonzaga will always have better athletes and more off the dribble players? I know, I know..."Bo has won Big Ten titles" and "don't you remember what it was like before Bo?" I do actually remember what it was like before Bo. In fact I remember people complaining about the recruiting of Dick Bennett. You remember him don't you? He was the guy that brought Kirk Penny and Devin Harris and Mike Wilkinson to UW and also actually led a team to the Final Four. Those players might ring a bell because they are without question 3 of the 4 best players to play for Bo Ryan. Look...is Bo a good coach? Of course, in many ways he is a very good coach. But what might he be able to do if he actually recruited some gifted offensive players for a change? Like it or not recruiting is a MAJOR part of college coaching and as the rest of the Big Ten improves Bo and his boys will regress. He is no longer "clearly the best coach" in the Big Ten..Matt Painter, Tubby Smith, Bruce Weber, Thad Matta, John Belein, Tom Crean, and of course Tom Izzo can all really coach. Every one of them can and will recruit harder and better then Bo as well. What does this mean? I guess that we should all expect Wisconsin to be at a disadvantage from here on out in the Big Ten and none of us should ever expect something better. But hey, remember how bad the Badgers used to be?

I am not sure what Blaise and his boys have in store for you but I imagine he will be looking to scare the bijeezus out of his guests. This event takes place in Blaise's own yard and the $3 admission fee will go entirely to the local Children's Hospital.

I have not watched wrestling in many a year but back in the day it was MUST SEE TV. For my money the AWA was the be all and end all of the wrestling world but the early 80's brought us some classics as well. I was always partial to Bobby "The Brain" Heenan but Captain Lou was a pretty damn good heal manager as well. The Captain passed away this morning at the age of 76...I would have guessed he died years ago, who knew. But in his honor here are a couple of solid clips for old times sake.

Well the latest "retirement" of Lord Brittney Favre did not last long did it? With today's announcement of Brit's signing with Minny can there be any doubt that his every move, back to and including his first tearful "retirement", was meant to put him in a Viking uniform.

What could make Brett turn his back on a fan base that forgave his many off field indiscretions and blamed his numerous late season embarrassments on everyone and everything not named Favre? Perhaps it is "The Old Gunslinger's" love of the game. Perhaps it is the wish of "The Hattiesburg Hillbillie's" family( after all what will become of Scott when Brett retires?). But my money says that it all comes down to his hatred for Ted Thompson. After all we need to remember that Ted was the man that had the audacity to expect his QB to actually show up and practice with his teammates. Ted was the man that drafted a QB to replace Brett(of course Brit refused to give TT any commitment going forward prior to the draft). Ted was the man that ignored Brett's wishes that he name Steve Mariucci head coach of the Packers.

It will not surprise me if Brett has a few wonderful games. He will probably be happy to hand the ball off to Adrian Peterson and throw safe passes to his middling recieving corp. But at some point it will all unravel...Brett will not be able to fight off "The Old Gunslinger" mentality. He will throw the ball to the wrong colored jerseys and eventually the locker room will splinter. The Vikes will not win a Super Bowl, probably not win the division and Brad Childress will be fired. Brett will announce his retirement saying it is "the toughest decision he has ever made" and he will wait and hope that there is one more poor sap of an organization that will allow him to torpedo their future.

You go get 'em Brit...at least you made John Madden's day.

I spend way too much time perusing the internet. I visit way too many message boards( I seldom post), read a ton of articles (some actually related to sports) and watch all kinds of video(VERY seldom any porn...I swear). Every now and then I find something really neat that I think might interest my ESPN listeners. When that happens I will now try to bring them to your attention on my blog. I must warn you however that I procrastinate with the best of them...so we will see how loyal I am to my blog. The more feedback I get the more often I will post.

The following link came to my attention while visiting a very good message board related to Marquette Basketball. This is a wonderful inside look at the late Al McGuire that was done by a Chicago producer way back in 1972. This was the year that star center Jimmy Chones signed a deal with the ABA and left late in the year. For those of us of a certain age the names will be very familiar...Allie McGuire, Bob Lackey, Larry McNeill, Marcus Washington...and Al's personality will come through loud and clear. For the younger viewer that might remember Al as a commentator this might be your first look at Al the coach. All I can say is this is very cool. Tim Dillard?... Really?

As I write this at 12:51 on Monday it appears as if Tim Dillard will serve as the latest batting practice pitcher to take the mound for our beloved Milwaukee Brewers. His start would come on Tuesday replacing Mike Burns( quick idea for Prince Fielder...in next years Home Run Derby why not bring along Burns or Chris Smith or Jeff Suppan...they sure seem willing and able to groove batting practice fastballs with the best/worst of them). This makes me think that something might be in the works as no team that actually considers themselves playoff caliber would really trot another tomato can like Dillard out to the mound to pitch in a pennant race. Might Doug Melvin and Jack Z.( I don't know how to spell his name) be talking about a Hardy for Washburn and others trade? The others possibly being hard throwing but underachieving Brandon Morrow? If this thing was to get done fast Washburn could make the Tuesday start and while certainly not as sexy as CC, combined with Alcides Escobar's starting debut, Tuesday night might be kind of fun.

To Trade Or Not To Trade?

The Brewers are in a tough position as the trading deadline approaches. It seems clear that this is not a playoff team as currently configured. The starting pitching stinks and despite their history it seems as if JJ Hardy and Corey Hart are not capable offensive players at this stage of the season. (If I see JJ pound one more ball into the ground with runners in scoring position I will stab my eyes out with a dirty steak knife). I understand the camp that feels that Doug Melvin should go all in and try to win now, but does this team really have the talent to win anything? Does Roy Hallady suddenly make Corey Hart lay off a slider? Does Felipe Lopez make Craig Counsell 10 years younger or Seth McClung suck any less? The Brewers probably feel that they owe the fans an effort to "win now". But at what cost? This is not a legit playoff team. Roy Halladay or a lesser pitcher is not going to make them a legit playoff team. This is a team built to win games with offense and their offense is middling at best. This is why you get paid the big money Doug...lets see what you do.

I was quite confident that when I came into work today people would be ripping Ken Macha for allowing Jason Kendall to swing away in the 9th. I was not disappointed. I have talked about this for the last few years but here I go again...sacrifice bunting decreases your chances to score runs. But if you want to hang onto your outdated baseball strategy what about this old adage? "You play for the tie at home and the win on the road".

For some reason Cardinal fans, media and players have a big woody about the Brewers untucking their shirts after a win. This new tradition is in honor of Mike Cameron's father who after a good day of work would come home and untuck his shirt and relax. Well imagine my surprise when I found this old video tape of "The World's Smartest Man" Tony LaRussa after a "good nights's work". I may be wrong but it appears as if his shirt may be untucked...Mr LaRussa...You are not respecting the game.

Is Weeks Jinxed?

If you have listened to my show at all over the last 4 years or so you know that Rickie Weeks and the promotion of Rickie Weeks is one of my main causes. I was pretty much alone on the bandwagon for most of the last couple years but I was still hanging on with all my might. 2009 looked to be the year that Rickie finally lived up to the hype(I remember one sports talk host predicted a Hall of Fame career for Weeks...I can't remember the guys name...good looking fellow, went by the name Hoofy or Goofy or something)but now comes word that he injured his left wrist in Sunday's game. If this turns out to be a serious injury, and a bad wrist can be devastating to a hitter, it may not be a critical blow to the team's playoff hopes. Craig Counsell has been hitting extremely well and should do fine defensively at 2nd base. Mat Gamel may now get a better chance at playing the left hand role in a soft platoon at 3rd. This does not even take into account the inevitable calls for Alcides Escobar to make his everyday debut. This team has many weapons and should be able to weather the storm reasonably well but if/when Rickie comes back one must wonder how he will be affected. The kid has all the talent in the world and by all accounts is one of the most dedicated players on the team. He deserves some good news and a few good breaks. Lets hope for the best and that Rickie is back in the lineup soon.

For some reason I have a hard time keeping up on my blog. Each time I am "politely reminded" to write something I have a greater appreciation for guys like Rob Demovsky and Emmitt Prosser....guys that actually write for a living. Maybe it is my terrible typing skills, maybe it is my 2nd grade like punctuation ability, when am I supposed to use a comma again? Maybe it because I am notoriously lazy. Whatever the reason I am not very fond of this part of my job. But I will try to get in the habit of posting something every day.

Coming up today on the show we will talk with Lew Gruppo and also discuss the Mat Gamel promotion as well as some Brewer post game open line.

Well there you have it an actual post. That should get the powers that be off my ass for a few days. What is the over under on how many days until my next one?
